Maitama Reading Rooms
A library and seminar house for teenagers and visiting scholars, built to be repaired in Abuja rather than reordered from abroad.

The structural challenge
The foundation hosts teenagers on Saturdays and scholars during the week. The building had to feel serious enough for a public lecture and robust enough for a class that rearranges the chairs. The budget favoured materials a local joiner can repair. An imported acoustic-panel scheme looked correct in the sample and would have failed the first time a panel was damaged, because the replacement lead time was measured in months. The street is busy; the reading rooms needed quiet without turning their back on daylight.
The execution
Reading rooms take light from a clerestory, so the street face can stay quiet: brick, a single bronze door, and a planted court that does the work of a foyer. Shelving is sapele, built in modules, so a reading room can become a seminar without a second fit-out. Floors are terrazzo with a local aggregate, honed for the dust. We refused the imported acoustic panels and drew a timber baffle the Abuja joiner can replicate from a template kept on site. Storage for the spare chairs is a room, not a corridor. The result is a public-feeling house that the foundation can maintain after we leave.
